Ap-pleasant time was had by all!

What seemed like a ton of apples were washed, chopped, scratted (and re-scratted), pressed and poured into sterilised and rinsed bottles to produce litres and litres of lovely scrumptious apple juice at our Apple Pressing Day on Sunday 26 September.

A-scrumping we did go!

Visitors were fascinated to see the activity and many happily took a turn at one of the processing stations. The kettle boiled, tea was served, biscuits were appreciated (thanks to Jenny), a good amount of chatting and catching up was attended to. Also huge thanks to Max and Andrew for letting us use their hosepipe, saving us the backbreaking work of carrying clean water to the Hub!

Pressing in action

Roger, Jeremy and Frank brought their own apples for ‘single estate’ pressings to create their own ‘taste the difference’ vintages, while most of us were quite happy to down the bog-standard scrump juice that was produced from a whole gamut of apple varieties.

All that was left in the end – good for the compost heap!

The day raised a handy £37.50 for Society coffers and saw three new members join us.
Barney the Sharpener was also very pleased with the business he did in sharpening tools, with many happy plotters walking away with nicely rejuvenated shears, secateurs and saws.

Thanks to everyone who helped out, took part, visited and generally made the event such a success.

A plotholder on Craven Vale Allotment since 2010. I'm particularly proud of my expanding vineyard, which in a good year creates litres and litres of red and white wine! I love our site for the fabulous views over the sea and Downs, as well as the wealth of wildlife that can be found here. It really is a bit of countryside in the heart of the city. I feel very lucky to have my plot.
