CVWHAS Mini Bed Scheme a beacon for Brighton

Working on the Mini Bed Plot, 18 January 2025

This weekend, CVWHAS held a Mini Bed plot workday and Open Day to showcase the scheme to site reps and society reps interested in replicating similar schemes on their own allotment sites. Representatives from Lower Roedale, Roedale Valley, North Nevill and Moulescoomb Estate allotment sites came to visit and had plenty of questions on how we’d constructed the beds and in what ways the Scheme was promoted and administered.

We were also pleased to meet and chat with Brighton & Hove City Council’s new Allotment Officer, Gemma Ward who showed great enthusiasm for the Scheme and was very supportive of all our efforts.

In addition, a number of Mini Bedders and CVWHAS committee members got stuck in with some essential maintenance on the plot, including weeding, planting bulbs and speading woodchip (kindly donated by the Council) onto all the paths. By the time the day had ended, more of the lower end of the plot had also been cleared of weeds and rubbish and another two Mini Beds constructed, bringing the total now to 14. It is hoped that the final six beds (so making 20 beds in all) will be built and ready to let by the spring.

Massive progress: woodhcip laid and two new beds created

A big ‘thank you’ to everyone that visited and helped today, with especial thanks to Mary for cooking up a delicious chilli to keep us warm on such a bitterly cold day!

A plotholder on Craven Vale Allotment since 2010. I'm also one of Site Reps, as well as a member of the CVWHAS committee. I feel very lucky having a plot on such an amazing site - with views across to the South Downs and the sea, it feels like a piece of the countryside within the city.
