A great Apple Day 2024

Saturday 7th September saw the return of our annual apple pressing day organised by CVWHAS committee member Mary Ledgard.

Setting up was a bit damp but thankfully the clouds cleared and the pressing began! Allotmenteers started by chopping the apple harvest. It was then passed twice through the scratter to make a chunky pulp before pressing.

Chopping the apples

Many hands made light of the work and many bottles filled. A good suggestion was to freeze some juice for Christmas breakfast morning. Some folk took leftover apple pulp to brew vinegar while others took some for composting.

The Hub was open for tea and of course our delicious cakes: homemade Swedish apple cake, lemon polenta drizzle and tahini buns. It was great to be joined by some of our new plotholders.

A big thank you to all the volunteers on the day and those who went scrumping during the week.

A plotholder on Craven Vale Allotment since 2010. I'm also one of Site Reps, as well as a member of the CVWHAS committee. I feel very lucky having a plot on such an amazing site - with views across to the South Downs and the sea, it feels like a piece of the countryside within the city.
