First Mini Beds completed – and let – ahead of schedule!

On Saturday 20 January, we were very pleased to be able to let the first few completed Mini Beds to people at the top of the waiting lists for Whitehawk and Craven Vale allotments, some of whom have been waiting more than 5 years to get food growing.

While we had thought that we wouldn’t be in a position to let till the spring, the great progress of our voluneers has meant that six tenants are now able to get started cultivating their own bit of ground right away.

The first few Mini Beds with access paths in between have now been completed

Once the rest of the plot has been cleared of weeds and levelled, we should be able to construct at least another 10 beds, allowing even more people to get gardening!

Thanks to our new bedholders, we were also able to make use of the extra man/womanpower to reorientate the large shed on the plot, making access easier and, in time, giving us the opportunity to create a water collection system from the roof which can help irrigate the beds in drier weather.

A plotholder on Craven Vale Allotment since 2010. I'm also one of Site Reps, as well as a member of the CVWHAS committee. I feel very lucky having a plot on such an amazing site - with views across to the South Downs and the sea, it feels like a piece of the countryside within the city.
