The Big Spud Weigh-in reveals a new winner!

Plot holders from Craven Vale and Whitehawk Hill allotments gathered with anticipation on Sunday 3 September to find out who had been most successful in the site’s Spud-in-a-Bucket competition, the fun and friendly annual potato-growing championship organised by CVWHAS.

A big crowd gathered for the event (as well as for tea, cake and chat!)

Starting on a level playing field, 24 entrants were given just one seed potato and a regulation-sized bucket six months ago.  It was then up to the participants to decide on compost mixtures, drainage, watering /feeding regimes and other techniques to help produce the largest weighing crop – the results could not have been much different!

Young and old took part

Overseeing the ‘big reveal’ was Mary Ledgard, from the CVWHAS committee, abley assisted by David and Pádraig, who were responsible for tipping out each bucket, retrieving all spuds – no matter how small – and making sure that any surplus mud was brushed off so the subsequent weighing was fair and accurate.

So, without further ado, the results were..

3rd place went to Mark Fuller & Jason Lee, with a crop weighing in at 1kg exactly. They kindly donated their prize money to CVWHAS.
In 2nd place was Tara Salter with a crop weighing in at 1kg 50grams.
..and our winner for 2023 was Fiona McKinnon with a crop weighing a really impressive 1.1k.
Here she is being presented with her prize money and the 2023 Spud-in-a-Bucket Cup.!

Think you can do better? – If you’re a plot holder on Craven Vale or Whitehawk Hill allotments and fancy taking part in 2024, look out for notices around the site in spring next year.

A plotholder on Craven Vale Allotment since 2010. I'm also one of Site Reps, as well as a member of the CVWHAS committee. I feel very lucky having a plot on such an amazing site - with views across to the South Downs and the sea, it feels like a piece of the countryside within the city.
